Cooling existing buildings

Better summers start with existing homes.

How can cooling in existing homes be improved?

Existing homes need solutions that fit their layout and building conditions. A useful approach is to limit heat gains, use available cooling opportunities and select additional technology according to actual needs.

What can be improved first?

External shading intercepts sunlight before it reaches the glazing. Ventilation during cooler periods can help remove stored heat. The right combination depends on factors including orientation, windows and how the home is used.

Why does retrofit potential matter?

A solution needs to work with the existing building and everyday routines. Installation effort, ease of use and continued use of existing buildings are therefore central development questions for RCS.

Who is RCS developing for?

Our approach focuses on existing homes and dialogue with people who live in, manage or improve them. Households, housing organisations and potential partners can contribute their requirements to the discussion. RCS is in development; product details and availability will become more specific as development progresses.
